Watching this as a kid, I always felt angry when the clown was beaten up AFTER being changed back. I thought he did nothing wrong and he wasn't himself while in his black & white state.

I kind of appreciated that they let the PPG be a bit morally complex. They were usually good, but could also be selfish, greedy, and wrathful and the show never tried to handwaive it or pretend that was a good thing. Like the time Buttercup starting knocking out everyone's teeth to make tooth fairy money, and all the villains ganged up to kick her ass while neither of her sisters helped her. They were just kids, kids that happened to have super powers.

I thought that too, but then someone on /co/ explained it something like this and it kind of made sense:
He wasn't magically changed when he lost his color, He was pissed he lost it and was taking it off against everyone, and when he got it back and he was happy again he tried to pass the shit he did under a bridge.
basically he wasn't forcefully transformed by the bleach, he was just being an asshole about losing his colors.
