>>102713399I know when I was a boy and they came out I hated Treasure Planet because of the visuals. I always loved Treasure Island, and a plain old bluewater adaptation would have been kickass, or a space one with regular ships. Instead, you got this halfass monstrocity of a money pit between the two. It got about the same kind of reaction as The Last Jedi among my friends. You could see all the skill put into the technical elements and it was impressive, but just no saving the base direction. It works on the low level with clothing and sidearms and building architecture and whatnot, but once you get to the ships, no go.
Wheras something like Titan AE got a pass instead in the same era.
Atlantis, was absolutely loved though despite being rushed in the middle. Main weakness with that one was they tried to primarily merchandise the Atlantean fish ships and crap when all the kids really wanted was cool stuff like the all the WWI gear and the expedition vehicles. Little boys will pick dragons and machine guns over unicorns and light rays every day of the week. I don't know why Disney keeps forgetting this. They should have made Mignola draw the Atlantis stuff to look more mechanical like zoids if they wanted to push that angle
