In any case, no, "anime inspired western cartoon" is still "western cartoon", however, it the "confusion" does sometimes allow for some shitposting, depending on how long it takes for the mods to notice, or how popular it is in Japan, a la RWBY getting a Japanese dub and manga.

This really seems more like something that should be funded by some shit like indiegogo, or more a fit to being a webcomic.

You are correct. And the mods were atypically fast too which is odd when we had a handful of pornographic threads up for an hour earlier today.

My gripe with the moderation aside, it was a legitimate question (which was more than answered). It does raise the bigger debate about the current online distribution of anime and the viability of these business models. When companies end up funding this kind of schlock and aren't at all transparent about what percentage of the cut they're sending the studios' way, it isn't unreasonable to question the ethos of companies like Crunchyroll.

I want to believe that somewhere she has the CAPABILITY of being an interesting writer, because some of her more personal comics that talks about the issues she seems to have seem somewhat interesting, but the problem is that she doesn't extend this to her professional writing, at least from what I've read.

When she writes comics they always end up being pretty safe, where not too much happens. For example, in the beginning of Marvel's Hellcat nothing much really happened besides some weird balance of casual life and progressiveness. Even her Adventure Time comics weren't all that interesting, and her original comic I lost interest in after about 2 issues.

However, tumblr crowds will probably like it, so I suppose there's still an audience for it, but it won't be anything truly special.

Crunchyroll has issues with its players and subtitling, but they have enough time to fund a whole western show? It pretty much has to be fantastic for everyone to ignore that, and even then, it's not anime or effecting the anime industry, which the company says they "give back too".

This seems to be the sticking point that's irritating a bunch of people. Rather than fix their service or expand VRV to countries outside America (which, from what I understand, fixed a lot of the playback issues and moved away from Flash) they're using money gained from people that want anime, to produce something that isn't anime. None of their customer base was asking for this.

I am of the opinion that the show is going to either be standard stuff that doesn't really push the envelope beyond "alright" or a show that will be outdone by other cartoons in the same demo and quickly forgotten even if CR pushes it as an anime saver. It would be nice if I was wrong and it turns out really good but the odds aren't in its favor.

The show existing is not a blight on anime like people like to say. It is obviously not for most people here for example but it will probably get at least a few people to go "I could do my own animated show one day". That's nice.

They did an absolutely horrid job announcing it. A trailer with almost no actual animation or focus on the story, instead focusing on how cool it has to be that their writing staff is all women. Productions that tout their workers as standard-changers while producing nothing of substance is a bad idea.

And I'm sure it's mostly on CR's part that they thought this way of announcing it was a good idea. It basically painted giant Xs on the production team who has nothing to show yet.

I'd prefer if all this ire was on CR instead of the team, but that's how the internet goes.

That is a good point, its just poor marketing to try to sell a cartoon to people that want anime. If they wanted to expand their market they could have tried to stream old cartoons people where nostalgic for.

/a/ is a hobby that often extends more naturally into the NEET lifestyle as many of the series/figures/etc are made specifically for that "subculture". Posting anything other than /a/ is stupid when there are literally thousands of shows to source from. /co/ is split into cartoons/comics and even then we have a heterogeneous community of content from America, Eastern/Western Europe, and occasionally Chinese/Korean shows if mods' panty knots come a little loose for once. There is no single style that unifies the entire board quite like /a/. Say what you will about "not all anime looks the same" but you know as well as I do that even someone with a sub 70 IQ can point out when something is from Japan and when something is from the West.

The best anime have been made by people who see anime as a medium, and not a "culture". Many of these people have dabbled in live action film, video games, and, in one instance, a fucking puppet show.
The more we see "anime" as a specific culture with all the tropes and stereotypes and not the Japanese word for "animation" the more we get derivative shows about the same thing over and over, i.e. Franxx, SAO, and this shit.

Hideaki Anno said it best back in 1997. If you want to make good, original anime again, you have to look outside of anime.

Inspired by what exactly? Inspired by Japanese people making animations?
They get into anime not because they want to use animation to convey their original ideas, but because they want to be the next Miyazaki, or the nest Oshii, or the next Anno. And what happens? They just copy them. Because they're not artists. They're consumers. They're so wrapped up in the "world of anime" that they forget that it's just a fucking art form. It's a vehicle for telling your own story.

The problem with the industry currently doesn't even have anything to do with the highly derivative products being pumped out. It is mostly the mentality behind anime production where a committee initiates a business venture with the expressed purposes of making something to publicise the source material. This is the real trap the industry has fallen into, everything is made cheaply and (for the most part) cynically because what really matters is how many volumes of manga you'll be selling. So original anime has been a joke for many, many years and adaptations are meant to be cost-effective because no one expect BDs and DVDs to sell. So the point is that the problem isn't necessarily derivative anime, it's seasons with 60+ shows when in the old days a year wouldn't have 60+ shows. It's madness and completely unattainable and the industry is heading to a big, big crash if they don't completely destroy the culture of anime and pander to the western market. This is where stuff like Netflix and Crunchyroll figures in, they're the lifeline the anime industry hopes to cling to and at the same time they are the malignant cancer that is destroying it.

Film distributors pays production companies to produce films and series, they get paid for it and the distributor keeps the copyrights and most of the royalties.

We've had production by committee for the longest time, anon, that really isn't the problem here. Some studios think it’s a brilliant idea to build hype for a product that doesn’t exist yet. That’s something that only works for crowdfunding purposes. Most major production companies understand that you can only build legitimate hype if you show a trailer first.

Netflix helped fund SnK so that they'd be the first to distribute it on their service, and if a studio had the desire to do an adaption of a pre-existing work, the parent company for that manga or LN or VN would step in and help fund it because of possible merchandising money, etc. What would happen at that point would probably be the studio then negotiating a deal with both companies as part of that committee, rather than being subservient to it. I don't mean to insist that this alternative method is the way the industry should go, if that's what you thought I was getting at. I'm merely saying that there are alternative proposals that haven't been tried or largely considered.

Having your mascot have a series is not a good idea, because it stops being your mascot and gets turned into a series character. I'm not sure why Crunchyroll is the one behind it or why they market it like this. But I suspect it's more to do with corporate blindness rather than the actual content of this show.

In the trailer they described it as "cute" and "warm" and "funny". They didn't describe it as "important" or anything like that. That makes me think that the show, while having progressive elements, wouldn't focus on those elements. It'll probably be like Steven Universe, where, say as you may about it, had a diverse cast but a plot that didn't preach about diversity but instead focused on telling an entertaining story. (Funnily enough, I saw sjws on Tumblr reject SU recently because it isn't progressive enough for them. For instance, the fact that Steven's racist paternal grandparents weren't punished severely rubbed a lot of people wrong).

If you're actually wondering, these corporate decisions has their weird way of being made that involves a variety of things like market research, cross-promotions with other IPs that maybe some parent company have shares in, tie-ins with future plans, part of some deal with other companies for an entirely unrelated thing, etc. It's probably not that big a deal for them, they'll throw some money at it, go through the motions of promoting it and not really care about whether it fails or succeeds like that one anime with the eyelashes.

If you have a corporate mission and consumer expectation is that you provide a legal streaming service of anime and relay the profits back to Nipland, to get in the business of producing bad cartoons doesn't make good optics. And I don't think stuff like podcasts should even be on their website, the most that they could host is some sort of anime news aggregate outsourced from who the fuck cares, now hosting their own podcasts (which are incredibly poor quality) is just a step in the the wrong direction albeit a tiny one in comparison to funding, producing and hosting their own cartoon.
