Like not only does he kill his family to become king, BUT ALSO he's a rapist-- maybe keeping the focus on how he took the throne from the rightful king(s) was seen as working better as the sole focus of the movie and what drives Simba's return. Though they also showed him slapping women around in the finished film, but that didn't get a whole song.
For some reason when I first heard of Scar wanting Nala and THAT being the reason she left, I thought leaving for that vs. leaving for the sake of the entire kingdom made Nala seem too "selfish" or something in that scenario. Don't think that anymore, but it is kind of nobler that she left apparently just to find help in the final version and contrasts better with Simba wanting to avoid responsibility.
