When you were a kid, you didn't actually weigh the moral implications of people's actions, you just based your opinion on people on emotional, or even subconscious, perception. So by kid logic, this guy is unpleasant, therefore he is a villain.

Considering how well critically-acclaimed the movie is, this mechanism never quite goes anywhere when you grow up, you just start using it less.

He didn't steal it out of some ethic to preserve a piece of history or culture or because it was a masterpiece in art. He stole it because he wanted to sell it.

There's no fucking way Woody was so rare he couldn't have bought one on early eBay for cheap. Is Andy's doll the last Woody in existance? No.
It would've been simple for Al to bite the bullet and spend, say, $10,000 on Woody, so that he could sell his collection for (assuming) $100,000. He got that extra 0 added for a reason. That toy museum is also a bunch of cheap asses if they wouldn't take everything Al had minus Woody.

If Woody was the hero of his franchise, wouldn’t that mean that he would be the most common doll to find? Shouldn’t some obscure fuck like Pete the Prospector be more difficult to find since most kids would rather play with Woody.

It would be like if Batman figures stopped being produced and they became collectors items. Batman himself would probably the easiest to find because every kid wanted a Batman. A fucking Alfred action figure would be much harder to find -and thus be more highly sought after by collectors.

That’s a good point. I remember hearing that classic G.I. Joe nurse dolls are valuable because they weren’t at all popular. But in Woody’s case maybe Round up came on the air right before the space race started. So it’s popularity was explosive, but short lived.

Think of why early comics are so rare. A short boom but then they were recylced fir paper to help the war.
If Round Up came out a year or months before the Space age then its reasonable that any toys were just thrown away or reused for something different.
