They were supposed to. The design was inspired by Gerry Anderson marionette shows like Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. I thought it worked really well. Certainly better than the bland smooth sameface 3D animation character designs in most shows.

Star wars is owned by Disney.

Yes, back in the 40s-50s anime was inspired by Disney. Everyone and their mom knows this. And that's only because Disney movies were the only studio of quality back then so pretty much everyone was inspired by their movies.

But modern anime? It has evolved into its completely on own thing. Theres really nothing else like it.
