Also what does this "What If" chapter accomplish? Just if Lucy had died (which she totally should have) she'd be a bitch haunting Mike forever? That all the serious,melodramatic points in the story mourning her absence and dealing with the dynamic shift is basically summed up as

And it tanked hard with volume 5 and onwards.
It's like vol 2 and 3 were the buildup while vol4 is the peak, and everything from that point on is just a very dragged out ending with unneeded fluff added.
I would've posted a film theory graph that illustrates the typical process of a story, but I can't find it

I never thought about it before but you're probably right. Best art style, self-contained plot anyone can jump into, good premise and execution all around, and the most McCain-per-page of any other chapter.
Mike and Lucy are basically background characters throughout the while thing, too. It really makes you think.

Well, I was wondering how Mike was going to talk his way out of seemingly calling Paulo a bitch, but I guess that's not the point of this chapter. Still odd how M and L are taking this in stride. You'd think they'd take a moment to try to talk their issues out, but Mike just wants Lucy gone and Lucy seems oddly unconcerned with that, or anything really. Wish Mike had a chance to finish what he was saying on the hill, but maybe Tae's saving Mike's explanation of his feelings for the main plot.

I really hope we get to see that far. Mike's already lost his temper with a few time he'll have a meltdown if she starts shit talking Sandy. But chances are Lucy knows this and might ease up a bit.

As for build-up, the obvious end here would be whatever leads putting Lucy's "tortured" spirit to rest. God only knows what that will be. Maybe ghost blowjob is the answer after all.

To say the entire time is kind of an exaggeration, since in earlier chapters he's at Lucy's house fairly often and turns Daisy down because he plans to hang out with Lucy instead. I know what you mean, though. I just thought Lucy actually killing herself would prompt him to change his attitude a little. It's really more Lucy I'm surprised by. She like hard reset to her volume one personality, it's kind of baffling.

Maybe Tae is just tired of the drama between them and just wanted to relax by writing some Vol 1 style Mike and Lucy.

There's got to be some important moment Taeshi is trying to reach if she's skimming past all this stuff. Paulo's relationship with Rachel if Lucy was dead and Mike not telling everyone about December could both potentially be really interesting to explore. I know it'll be lackluster when we get there but there's gotta be some kind of climax.

Tae would have to write whole new scenes in that AU. In this one Lucy was already gone so she can pretty much just use the same scenes but with Lucy commenting and Mike looking sort of uncomfortable.

Another anon mentioned that the homo Paulo chapters are up next, but if Lucy is tethered to Mike will she even see much of that? I guess there was that once scene where Paulo asks if he can just turn gay, but to Mike I don't think it was a really significant event. If homo polo gets skipped, what's the next major event we could see?

"Dial Tone" wouldn't make as much sense anyway, so that would likely be skipped.
So, then would be first day of the school year, and then Sandy's visit which I'm assuming we're being rushed towards since after that is been Lucy's return which would mean Tae would have to come up with new scenes instead of retread old ones, and I doubt she'll be doing too much of that.
