>>102249977A generic fan-webcomic author could never transition to his own IP, sure. But Prequel? Can you even IMAGINE how much demand there is nowadays for a proper successor to Homestuck? The moment Kazerad starts updating daily (or even weekly), he's on the road to (in)famous cult author status, for good or ill.
>>102248724I feel like Kaz treats Prequel like a hobby, laboratory and playground all at once, which I can sorta respect. Creating and updating a story at a pace that can sate your reader base is a huge, difficult risk/time and energy sink/commitment.
But Kaz really is missing out on his own potential to tell a great, normal story, if only he stopped playing mad scientist, did everything mostly straight, and actually took that risk/put in the time and energy. Thousands of people are begging for more of a sprawling, frequently updated comic with SOME (not constant) medium fuckery, more narration than average webcomics, good music, long-running characterization, and Deepest Lore. There's a boatload of reader passion and fan money awaiting whoever fills that void.
Hussie claimed to be a "vehement defender of literary exploration". He lacked any sense of responsibility for his work, frequently ranted/shitposted about fan entitlement on his Formspring. Homestuck was just a hobby/laboratory/playground to him, too. Look where all of that got him. A three year hiatus to include a ten minute anime into his immensely successful IP, and then throw the whole thing away, dust his hands off it, give readers the finger and fade away into obscurity. His work went straight from internet gem to something people only remember with bitter disappointment.
Of course, if Kazerad never makes Prequel into this high-risk kinda project, he'll never have to face the pitfalls Hussie faced, but he'll never reap the high rewards either and the webcomic scene will forever remain poorer for it.
