Gems are born competent in their purpose, but once they deviate from it they're babes in the woods. Just look at after she starts living on Earth, and tell me she isn't written like a child. Not to mention that it takes literal years to explain to a gem how human biology works, so no, they wouldn't even have an idea of what a kid is.
