It's okay. Some people think it's a masterpiece but I thought it was way too long for the content it had and it felt pretty repetitive. The manga had a better length to it but is missing a lot of the interesting visual aspects (and one of the best characters in the series) of the anime.

I don't want this to happen. Once something becomes accepted by the mainstream, all life is sucked from it and it dies. Anime is literally the only thing I have left that hasn't been corrupted.

If it makes you feel any better Japan remains societally autistic, so even when anime hits the big time and gets tons of shitty reboots/imitators there’s solid odds the source material remains more or less unscathed, and then you have decent odds that at least one of those live action reboots isn’t Death Note-tier.

I watched it for the first time a few months ago. It's extremely repetitive, the battles are worse than SU*, and things are intentionally vague and weird because the director wanted to be artsy. But aside from all that, the plot and characters are genuinely great, the animation and music hold up surprisingly well, and the final arc had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I definitely recommend.

*The scenes Steven Universe ripped off are basically the only good maneuvers. Most fights are about two minutes long, reuse stock footage or quick flashes, and every fight ends with a Dios ex Machina. There's absolutely no tension in most fights because of it.

The funny thing is all they pay homage to in Utena is just "girl with a sword", but none of these shows have the complex relationships and characters that made Utena such a strong show in the first place. It's like that image of "relationships built on prince/princess roles can become dysfunctional" goes over people's heads and all they see is "wow cute yuri". The relationships between the characters in Utena has more depth than Steven Universe does, and She-ra will.

The amusing thing to me here is that all the gayness in Utena was added to the anime adaptation against the original manga author's wishes, because the director is a crossdressing one-note dickhole who can't stand heterosexual relationships in fiction.

That's not the mainstream public's fault though (regardless of their lack of taste and analytic capacity), it's the uncreative suits trying to milk a cow they don't understand as much as they can.
Everyone is desperate to capture that one lightning in their bottles, but from those in charge and with the actual resources to try, very few have actual creative talent or understand the medium they're tackling.

There's also the fact that big projects with big money behind them will naturally make people choose the safest path and avoid risks (aka novelty); it's literally what happened to the movie industry, but that's another story.

No matter what happens in the west, the actual source material is almost certainly unchanged, and will remain perfectly fine... depending on what you consider good anime of course. Utena was project done by a group, Be-papas, which included another writer, Enokido, and a producer. I wouldn't say Saito's manga is the original. It's like the 2001 novel and movie.

It isn't even really right. Anime has been popular in the US for a while. Maybe not among normal adults, which may be the group with which it's getting more popular, but with kids and teens anime has been popular for over 20 years. You can buy anime and manga at most stores and if you go to most schools and universities there's a decent amount of people that you can hear talking about various anime. The big shonen anime are the most popular ones still, and it's been like that for forever, but that doesn't mean it isn't popular.

What's sad is that Utena was more than just a lesbo show and actually had strong themes, interesting directed scenes and a cooky as fuck movie complete with probably one of the most insane endings I've seen in animation and I've watched Xavier on the clock.
If these creators saw Utena as more than fag bait we would be in a god damn golden age.

It's weird as fuck. Watch it high as a kite. If you like incest, loli, yuri and shit you will prob like it. Also sword fighting and lots of cars for some reason.

The art and some of the animation hasn't held up too well though, and it is repetitive with lots of stock footage. It was a deconstruction or commentary on shoujo and a "shoujo but secretly grimdark" thing and had a big influence on Madoka Magica with a lot of the same themes, character and relationship types, and imagery/symbols.

The director guy was a mental weirdo.

Utena is the greatest anime of all time in my opinion. The writing is easily the best in the medium, its cast is amazing and well-developed, its OST is great, and its visual storytelling is incredible in every regard. The only possible issue is that it is a slow burn and it doesn't spell everything out for you so you have to invest yourself to get the most out of it. If you don't pay attention and really think about what is happening then you won't get that much out of it (like the other posters who responded to you). I am not being hyperbolic when I say almost everything which appears onscreen in Utena is there for a specific reason. If analyzing and thinking about a show is appealing to you it doesn't get better than Utena, and it's also a pretty emotional series to boot.

Utena is also a show which improves rewatching it. I've watched it more than q half dozen times and still pick up on new things.

The finale is the best to any show I've ever seen and better than most books I've read. It's genius how it recontextualizes the entire show, is pretty unique and nuanced in its message, and also an emotional rollercoaster at the same time. It's basically perfect which is why Adolescence was a disappointment.

"Deep" is an almost meaningless word but it is full of meanings if you care to find them and none of them are simple, each idea is approached from multiple perspectives. Utena gives a nuanced look at feminism, memory, gender roles, and relationships to name the most prominent themes. It has a lot going on just under the surface, if you think it is just lesbians sword fighting then you missed out.

It was made on a budget but everything that was recycled is very very important and has a couple different layers of visual storytelling. The episodes have a particular structure which is used to convey certain ideas and establish a pattern which can be subverted. Repetition is a theme in the show itself and has to do with memory and the slow process of societal and personal growth, how people repeatedly make the same mistakes before changing. The circular stairs to the dueling arena tie into this, each episode is another "revolution" in the wheel which moves the show and characters a little bit forwards while also resetting themselves. I won't deny the recycled animation was done for budget purposes, but the creators did a great job of turning a weakness into a meaningful and important part of the message. If you don't enjoy it that is understandable but it was done for multiple reasons.

The plot is a bit too complicated to summarize. Basically high schoolers duel to see who gets to own the "Rose Bride" who does whatever her current groom tells her to and is supposed to be able to "grant eternity" whatever that may mean. There's a lot more going on then that but that is the gist, hopefully you can see it's commenting on gender roles with that but it is more complex than it at first seems.

I'm a weeb with a few professional SJW journalist friends and I can tell you definitely,

SJW know that "anime is currently cool" at least to reference but Utena (and Sailor Moon) are the only shows they've watched. The ONLY ones.
Because it's "queer gender roles lesbianism disrupting the anime heterodoxy" or something.

There's like, four shows they watch. Sailor Moon, Utena, Evangelion and... Madoka probably? They know OF Dragon Ball but will only have watched some of it if they are a guy.

In conclusion: they know that anime is Cool to Reference Right Now but have only actually seen Utena because it aligns with social justice politics.

Basically kids becoming adults deal with letting go (or not) of the ideals they had when they were younger. They deal with growing apart from family and friends as they get older like everyone does. They deal with death and just the "we're all going to die, so what's the point" phase pretty much everyone goes through as a kid. They think about power and what you need to give up to get ahead. Gender commentary and sexuality commentary is there, but it's not the main thing.

Fuck, there's more brother/sister incest stuff than gay stuff. But really just playing into the emotional problems adolescents have, what's "normal" vs. what weird feelings and fetishes and shit are taboo, and things that are actually pretty typical kid things, just with bizarre and creepy imagery and symbolism.

I can see not liking it, but it's really just "growing up is confusing," not an "SJW" show, especially since it involves kids having sex with relatives and adults and shit. If it came out today, tumblr would campaign against this explotative pedo incest show. People only hold it to a different standard because they saw it before all the outrage culture and pedo witch hunt shit really started up.

Everything you wrote is true about the themes but simultaneously you are kidding yourself if you don't think it is also commenting on feminism, gender roles, and homosexuality to a large extent. It just includes them with its other themes since most aspects of Utena can refer to multiple things at once. The whole concept of the Rose Bride is commentary on gender and society and Anthy's character relates to a bunch of feminist ideas. Akio can easily be read as an allegory for toxic masculinity. Hell Utena dressing in boys' clothes is a statement in and of itself. You don't have to read it that way but it is very intentional.

you'd have to be blind to miss the way the show condemns masculine gender roles. The movie makes it more explicit but it's a big part of the show as well. Anthy flat out tells Utena in the finale that she can't understand her because she's a "boy" i.e. she assumed the masculine role of prince trying to save the damsel in distress.

The role of a prince itself is kind of complex. Part of it is seen as Utena sticking to childish ideals and pretending. We actually see the villain manipulate her into "growing up," becoming more feminine and losing her virginity to him. It's this whole "growing up vs staying young" thing.

Gender fluid orphan girl goes to a rich kids private school, using a loophole in the dress code to wear a boy's uniform. The lead is obsessed with living like a prince, since a random prince showed up at her parent's funeral to comfort her as a kid.

She soon finds out that the super rich kids at the rich kids school have a private fencing club where they have swordfights for the club slave, a black girl named "the rose bride". The lead wins her when she get a chance to fight the abusive boyfriend member who currenty owns the black slave.

The lead and the black slave girls become lovers and you find out all sorts of fucked up thing about the other fencing club members, including a stuck up bitch who finds out that she's adopted and oh yeah, the black slave girl? Not only is she the secret sister of the guidance counselor, but she's also FUCKING the guidance counselor.

The Guidance Counselor and his sister, the black slave Rose Bride turn out to be Gods/Jesus stand-ins and the school is actually purgatory that also somehow exists in the realm of the living. Centuries ago, the people killed the Rose Bride like they killed Jesus and the Guidance Counselor went insane and started collecting peoples souls and forcing them to relive high school on endless loop while his sister gets passed around as a fuck toy, to teach her humanity is beyond salvation. He tricks the lead to kill the rest of the students in the fencing club and gets his sister to stab her lover too. However, the lead escapes and goes on to the afterlife, and the black slave Rose bride eventually leaves the "school" to find her and reconcile.

TLDR it's Evangelion with lesbians and "high school as hell" Buffisms and mindscrew animation

I have never seen any other demographic talk about it, but people who are any two of lesbian, trans, or communist still make big ass comics and fan art and big 50,000 analyses posts about this decades old show. I have seen many different describe this show as one of the most important pieces of media, ever.

The other thing I hated was Anthy. I hated how at the end Utena still had feelings for her after everything Anthy did. Anthy deserved nothing from Utena, nothing at all. I hated that the strong-willed girl from the beginning of the series would return to someone who mistreated her like that.
All the pain is coming back to me now, god this show was soul-destroying.

I felt the same way the first time I watched it, but the second time I did it made a lot more sense. I think you should consider that sometimes people don't deserve to be forgiven but they still can be. That's sometimes what love is. Anthy does have good points though they can be hard to notice. Also Utena didn't treat Anthy very well either or try to understand her until very late into their relationship. Every character does some messed up things but that doesn't make them unworthy of love.

Most cartoons are better animated than most anime most of the time. The vast majority of screen time anime characters flap their lips and all the budget goes into specific shots, whereas with Western cartoons things are much more consistently fluid and involve the characters moving and interacting more with the world. Obviously there are exceptions and modern cartoons are valuing animation less and less but something like Spongebob is better animated than 95% of TV anime.

I didn't say it didn't, just that those are just some of the themes, not the entire thing.

For example, Touga and Saionji have a friendship that's also a rivalry. Saionji feels resentful of Touga and inferior, he gets angry and lashes out. Touga's wealth is a sticking point, Saionji has nowhere to go when he's expelled. Touga fucks him over, their relationship is manipulative, but they slowly try to rebuild their friendship eventually. I know some people think there's gay subtext there, but I don't think there's really a need to see that there.

Twuwabuki wants to grow up too fast. Meanwhile Miki idealizes her early childhood. He sees it through rose colored glasses. It was never that way in reality, and his sister knows it. She drowns her worries in sex while Miki uses his music. It later is revealed that their parents divorcing might be causing some of these problems and tensions, they are dealing with a broken home now.

Mikage's plot is about being willing to sacrifice for his research and seeing people as tools. Akio is the same. He used to have high ideals but now he just uses people and spins his wheels.

I'm saying it's more than just "lesbians wow!!" Even the lesbian plots aren't just about them being lesbians. Juri can't let go of an old idea of a friend who was actually a really shitty friend so she can't move on with her life. Utena and Anthy are ambiguous in the series and have lots of other ideas attached to their characters.

Sure, Hanna Barbera cartoons from the 1970s have smoother smoother walk cyle than Toei's television productions did in the 1970s but Mazinger Z is shown from all angles doing all kinds of crazy shit and you only see the Hair Bear Bunch walking from the side. Stock footage? You got the launch sequences in Combattler and a few attacks. Everything else is done on demand each episode. Compare this to a US television production of the same time where basically the entire show is recyled with the most that's changing is the backgrounds and a few episode specific shots. There's only a handful of cartoons I'd say that consistently better animation, Ed Edd and Eddy for example, every episode than the average television anime equivalent of their time period. Compare an episode of Layzner or Giant Gorg to what the US was producing domestically at the tine. Not even a contest. And even then, the respective budgets show that even subpar US productions were multiples more expensive. Episode 27 of Macross, one of the finest examples of television animation put on celluloid was put together on the equivalent of 20,000 USD at the time. Like so many things /co/ says, especially about things outside of this board's remits, it's a repated mantra of pig ignorance, failure to recognise reality, cherry picking and meme repitition.

If you didn't notice the gay stuff between them and Akio you weren't paying attention. Pic related is Akio taking pictures of the two of them in his private abode.

The only reason Utena and Anthy are even slightly ambiguous is because Saito forced it to be that way. The yuri subtext is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

The prince/princess/witch framework I see as primarily a commentary on gender and that is the main set of roles the series explores though there are others.

We don't disagree really I just don'r think these elements should be downplayed when they are so prominent.

Yeah, I don't think we disagree. I was just saying there were more themes than just that, and sometimes people act like the plot and themes were just about that and nothing else today.

I can see the Touga and Saionji thing, though I see more (creepy) stuff and Akio's end then between them on their own, I just assumed Touga slept with Akio and Akio pushed them into some shit, but his situation with Saionji feels a little less clear. I can see those feelings being there or not really.

I also generally see Utena and Anthy as romantic even in the tv show but the tv show rather than the movie does dance around it much more than say Steven Universe or even Madoka: Rebellion that come out and actually say it. There are other anime that are more upfront.

Juri meanwhile is just flat-out blatant, and Mikage, twist aside for now.

Well a ton of anime is set in high school but not necessarily targeted at teens, it's a huge trope/cliche in anime. I don't think Ikuhara writes for teenagers, he writes for himself and what interests him. I do think teenagers can enjoy Utena, and that some of the financial backing for the project depended on it being marketable to that demographic, but I don't think it should be dismissed as YA fiction. It deals with young adults, that doesn't automatically mean it is YA. Is Demian YA? Is Catcher in the Rye YA? I guess I'm assuming YA is a derogatory term but that is usually how it is interpreted and certainly seems to be the tone of the post I responded to.

And again with the whole JAP ANIMATORS ARE SLAVES AND GET GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES. The pay was shit, but Studio Nue didn't get any fucking subsidies. Tons of these studios in hte 70s and 80s didn't get subsidies. In addition, pay was shit for everyone in Japan. Especially in the 1970s. And that was before you had the rise of enthusiasts like Studio Nue who just wanted to work in animation and would accept tighter pay (and get better results, but that's largely due to the fact that techiques had improved over the 70s).

Because YA fiction themes lose some of their urgency once you're through the phase. As an adult, you should have dealt with a lot of it already and you're not at an age where your brain makes you unable to grok that everybody around you is dealing with the same shit, making fiction the only thing that can actually get through to you.

A well-written and produced piece of fiction doesn't lose its value, but the unique value such fiction has to teenagers and YAs is hopefully no more.

Anthy cared about Utena. Her trying to kill herself late into the series was to free Utena from the burden of fighting. And for the most part, Anthy was a very nice and sweet friend throughout the series, with the literal backstab scene being the only noticeable betrayal.

Until the final episodes, Utena didn't really know that Akio was evil and Anthy was directly involved in his plots. She only saw a good girl being hurt and tried to help her. (She also saw incest, but the two worked it out in the cantarella scene.) By the time Utena figured things out, she also learned that Anthy was in a very abusive relationship and wanted to save her, since she's a prince and saving Anthy has been her motivation since she was a kid.

I guess Utena is just a bigger person than me. That kind of betrayal would be unforgivable to me no matter what issues the person had. I guess it's a recurring impasse I reach with shoujo. So much of it expects me to root for the protagonist when she is loyal to people who mistreat her or who are violent towards her simply because she loves them.

It's a cult anime but it isn't even mainstream outsite Japan and specific circles of the anime fandom tbqh most anime fans don't even know it exists even the ones that like something like Madoka, while most anime fans are at least aware Evangelion is a thing, I've seen many otaku zoomers on social media like FB that enjoyed Evangelion and is like the only 4:3 anime they reference and the only otakus I've seen that like Utena are feminists on blogs or tumblr.

There's a lot of non-penis symbolism. The castle is just a projection created by Akio. It represents the "eternity" the duelists are fighting for and the ability to revolutionize the world to attain that eternity. It was a projection because such ideas are never able to be realized, they are a fantasy like the idea of being a princess rescued by a prince who will live happily ever after in a castle. The castle is upside down to represent that impossibility. Akio projects the castle and the dueling arena to give the idea to the duelists that there is something higher than the material world they live in, however in reality the highest place is Akio's tower all along and the duelists' fantasies were just that. It's talking about how ideals can be used to manipulate people and how such concepts as "revolution" and "eternity" (which a lot could be written about on what those mean) are unnatainable. Lastly Akio has no true power he can only project lies which manipulate others to do what he wants, Anthy is the one who actually is powerful, Akio is just a manipulator AKA society cannot truly control you and your thoughts if you don't let it. The whole ending has a lot of layers and possible interpretations, too many to fit in one post, but that is what I think the projector primarily represents.
The animal stuff was Anthy's doing. She is a witch and she loves animals, she sends animals to fuck with Nanami because she hates Nanami for a variety of reasons. Nanami turning into a cow is about self-image and self-ignorance and how you can change over time without realizing it (as well as being for comedy's sake). Plot-wise Anthy is responsible for the cow thing because, once again, she's a witch.
Utena did not fuck Touga that poster is wrong.

Utena isn't that kind of show lel. Ikuhara purposefully mixes up metaphors with the reality of what is happening so they're indistinguishable. It's not like a real projector could do what that one does anyway, call it a magic projector if that makes you feel better. The swords are "real" I would say in the context of the show, but they're metaphors too. The swords of hate are not projections and neither is the rose gate, but they are also metaphors. Basically everything is a metaphor, it's just the castle in the sky is a a metaphorical illusion if you catch my drift.

A lot of the show was silly, goofy, and bizarre for weirdnesses' sake (one episode is about a character turning into a cow for no really adequately explained reason - there's social commentary in it but even in context it's just strange). There are lots of other batshit things, too.

I see little in common between YA and the stuff Ikuhara directs aside from the target demo. YA is generally way more self-focused and about providing a single character for the audience to identify with, whereas Utena focuses on things from multiple angles and perspectives.

Anthy deliberately hides her emotions from Utena as well as her relationship to Akio. Utena desperately wants to be a prince and "rescue" Anthy to the point she ignores anything which would suggest something is wrong with the status quo. She's fourteen and she's dumb but her foolishness is her biggest strength as well as her biggest weakness. What you pointed out was a deliberate choice on the part of the writers, not an oversight, and it makes perfect sense given the characters' established personalities.

Is that the whole point of the sword sequences really? What about the fact that Anthy gives her sword to all of the duelists who own her at the time regardless of her feelings? Or what about the characters in the second arc who pull swords from people who don't care about them (Wakaba/Saionji, Keiko/Touga)? Both parties do not actually need to connect with each other, though it does help. And Utena and Anthy do have a connection but it is founded on ignorance on Utena's part and lies on Anthy's part. Anthy lies to Utena from the time she becomes her bride ("I must do whatever my groom commands") to the very end. Utena ignores all the weird stuff Anthy does in the first two seasons because she blocks out anything which doesn't fit her preconceived view of Anthy on top of generally not being very perceptive. Juri calls Utena "cruelly innocent" in the Black Rose arc and I think that sums up a lot of the issues she faces.
I just don't see how you could think it doesn't make sense given what has been established up to that point about the two characters. We know Utena is ignorant of Anthy's true feelings due to her own desires and we know Anthy is a master at lying and manipulating people. Is it that hard to imagine that she would not assume her friend was fucking her own brother? That's a pretty extreme thing to think about someone if you haven't seen any direct evidence of it of which there was none. Utena did notice Anthy was lonely as she says multiple times, her biggest sin was not really trying to figure out why and accepting what Anthy said unquestioningly.

I agree about Touga and Keiko, but I think that ironically, if not for all of the manipulation and shit, Saionji could have genuinely liked and gotten on with Wakaba well enough. That was a missed chance for him at a good thing, all because Touga and Akio were selfish. Though Wakaba's childhood friend was a more decent guy, for sure.

I could see that. I do think it's very possible the artists just wanted to draw the characters naked, which I don't really have a problem with. It could also be just another sort of reference to old European artwork as Utena has plenty of references to European culture anyway. Or a combination of all of those reasons.

On my DVDs the menu art is really weird though. Always gets a weird look from whoever I'm showing the series to lel. Sadly I can't find a picture online but it has characters groping each other (fully clothed) and mostly looking distressed. IIRC there's one with Utena, Saionji, and Touga which would be a weird threesome. I think Saionji and Touga would be too busy with each other to have much time for Utena.

I confess I decided to watch it because of SU though I knew it existed before. While I no longer care about SU, Utena has consumed a decent chunk of my psyche. I should have watched it years ago. Utena is highly regarded but I still think it is somewhat underrated or at least underrdpresented in modern discussions. Old stuff like Eva, Bebop, and even Trigun are recommended way more often then Utena and I think that's a shame since I consider it better than all of those. I'm glad it is getting attention and homages from western media because it deserves it. There's even a new anime this season inspired by Utena which I hope turns out well.

Touga isn't explored that much I agree, but Saionji has a decent amount going on with his characterization. He's not like Draco at all because when Saionji loses his position of power he becomes a big dork. All he really wants is some human connection, from Touga especially. He just thinks the way to get that is to beat Touga at his own game. There's a dichotomy there where he both despises Touga for always beating him and hiding things from him as well as a desperate desire to be his friend and probably his lover. He's not the deepest character but he isn't one note.

Let's agree to disagree fampai. You make good and valid points but here's my counter:

There's multiple instances where Saionji is shown to have just as many admirers as Touga in the school, and he was the first groom for the Rose Bride, so you can infer that he's beaten Touga at least once. Whatever problems he's got are all in his head. He's not lacking for external validation, even if it's the most shallow high school crush kind of validation, but hey, everyone *is* in high school, and a prestigious elite high school (taken on face value) at that, so it's not as though they have any real problems to deal with.

Secondly, there's the Wakaba episode. My favorite episode in the series because it deconstructs the "let's hook up the sidekicks" trope and tears it apart. Saionji kicked off the show by being the 'evil jerk boyfriend villain' that the shojou protagonist defeats with the power of magic and friendship, but 15 episodes on that's all he still is. In Wakaba's duel he's there as a mechanism to let Real Patrician Taste Best Girl have her catalyst to get up and do something about HER inferiority complex, who it turns out is also kind of a shallow teenager that's slightly manipulative with her emotions as well, though albeit on radically smaller scales (the virgin onion knight vs. the CHAD chuuni-onji), demonstrating that even in the scope of this show and the goings on in Ohtori Academy those people who aren't in the spotlight as the protagonist of their story or our collective stories as a group have their own plans, their own agencies, and even though they're supposed to be read as the "good guys" they're not infallible to human flaws. All that from Wakaba, and what's Saionji's role past this episode? He's become Spike, from Buffy. A defanged former villain kept around more for laughs than anything. Dayum shame.

Take a look at what >>101831682 posted: the fights have, wonder of wonders, an actual budget and choreography this time around. (The plot and characters are kind of turning me off though desu but its only the first episode my rule is give it up to 5 and see if it gets better)

As a character he's fine, though not the deepest. He does resent Touga much more than makes sense. His own accomplishments or just all the attention he (unfairly since he's a vile and violent human being) does get never makes him feel better. He just sees and thinks of Touga as always one step ahead even if that's not true, and that's all he cares about.

The fact that he might want friendship or love really is a more sympathetic point. But at the same time, that's an ugly trait, that resentfulness I mean. People who are just consumed by this petty jealousy even if they have it pretty good and they don't appreciate what they do have at all. Oh yeah and again, all the beating his gf stuff. A bit hard to like him after that, though of course all of the characters are very flawed and many are unlikable.
