They felt like everything he said was built on a lie, so they couldn't trust him anymore. If he had been honest about being a bender in the first place maybe it would have been different. But then he would have run the risk of some people not listening to him on principle because he's a bender.
It could have been handled better, but just saying how they were probably trying to handle it.
