That was retconned in later. In the original story he got rid of it because he found out it was hijacking his body and taking it for a joyride while he was asleep, which is admittedly also a valid reason for wanting to get rid of it.

The symbiote learns from the host not things the host sees. If so Peter was seeing lots of crime, but it didn't start doing crime. So as long as you're not putting things in your various holes, the symbiote won't start doing it.
