Agreed. jack jack being in another dimension like poltergeist got a few laughs out of me.

Overall the movie felt... off. like there were some weird pacing issues. I read that they were forced to switch spots with Toy Story 4 and lost a year of production time because of it so I believe that may be the culprit.

Even then, this is still a series with a world I want to see more of. Instead we got two more Cars sequels, and then some spinoffs with planes and boats. I'm not sure if even kids wanted more exploring of the Cars world.

A Planes style spinoff taking place in the Incredibles world does sound interesting. But only if they keep the same weird emotional quirks for all the supers like we saw in the dvd extras.

So far I think only Venture Brothers really captures the same level of self aware real world mundane-ness in a fantastic superpowers world. An Incredibles world series could try that too, only a lot less depressing than anything Venture Brothers.

It wasn't AWFUL by any stretch of the imagination. The only flaw is that the villain isn't anywhere near as good as Syndrome was. Everything else was fine.

The difference is that sequels tend to be worse than the original. Again, expecting a modern-day Pixar movie to surpass what is pretty widely agreed to be Pixar's best movie is a bit ridiculous.

I don't even think the movie is bad, it just wasn't as good as the original and everyone overexaggerates how bad it is because they were expecting it to be just as good as, if not better, than the original.

The problem is that Incredibles 2 was a decent super hero movie.

Incredibles 1 wasn't a super hero movie, it was a movie about family drama and coming to terms with age that just so happened to feature super heroes.

It would have been so easy for 2 to do that also.

he means it was a movie about coming to grips with age and getting over your "glory days" to see that what you have now is just as important if not more so. And this story was told through the lens of super heroes. A straight super hero movie is a movie that just follows a super hero like Iron Man or The Dark Knight. Any themes or messages are put into place after the hero is, unlike the Incredibles which did it the other way around and focused on those themes first.

According to Bird himself, he had an Incredibles sequel idea for many years, but never had the chance to really explore it. When he finally did, which was after Disney gave him the go-ahead, he realized it wasn't working, so he came up with the story we got more or less on the fly.

I want that too but I don't know what the approach should be. If it's them as they are now then it'd probably be something like "Spy Kids with superpowers".

Otherwise time skip it to them in their adulthood (maybe 15 years, making Violet about 30 and Dash about 25). Could make for a more serious flick like that (I came up with something along the lines of Kingdom Come, if they could do that within the confines of a PG movie).

I saw it last night and I thought it was awesome. The jack jack scenes were hilarious, we got a rubber superhero doing really cool action scenes (they get absolutely no love in movies!), and I loved seeing more of that 1960s flair. I'm sorry /co/ didn't like it, but I had a blast.

If someone said they are going to conquer you 30 minutes agothen saves the town 30 minutes later you don't cheer for them in the streets and it definitely isn't a easy process for them to get back their "rights" after they were "mindcontrolled". I was talking about this a few days ago with Ratatouille, how that can fairly easily be a normal drama movie. Just have Remi be a very low class person or a foreigner that could not be hired in the restaurant in France. A lot of Pixar movies can be regular movies if you remove the talking car/rat/dog element from them.

What they cannot be is a traditional Disney movie. If Disney made Ratatouille at the time then it would have been much less dramatic and more traditional of a kids movie. Linguini would probably have needed to save the restaurant from an evil developer, chef, or rival restaurant. And by the end it all would have worked out great with Remi being named head chef and all of France praising the rat that cooks publicly.

It lacks the charm of the original and feels completely disconnected from the world, tone, and personalities previously established. Dash's personality is completely nuked in the sequel and he just exist to spout quick one liners and be a nuisance. Violet acts like an aggravated borderline for the entire film when the original painted her as more relaxed l and shy except when pushed to her limits (usually by dash). Here her rage is constant and over the top.

The best part about the original was the witty writing and how rooted in reality it was. Here the writing is below average and the everything has been taken to Looney Tunes level of cartoony. Now aside from the animation and maybe some action pieces, I can't think of a single reason why 2 was better than the first? Why do you think it was?

While it doesn't top the original, it has a lot of really fantastic content in it. The train chase and the fight with the hypnotized supers are both fantastic action sequences with some incredibly creative uses of superpowers. And while the main plot is focused more on Helen's story than Bob's, Bob ultimately has all the best emotional scenes in the movie: waking up at 3 AM to teach himself New Math so he can help Dash with his homework, the awkward dadisms as he tries to make up for ruining Violet's date, bonding with Jack Jack over the discovery of his powers, and of course a truly heartfelt and tragic breakdown that every stressed out parent whose ever hit their wit's-end can empathize with. Helen may have gotten the bulk of the action, but Bob's relationship with his kids was the emotional core of the movie.

Any time when there was action happening I was delighted. The choreography is just as tight as the first film, and stuff like the kids fighting off the super heroes was visually captivating.

So the first scene of this movie is literally two seconds after the first one left off, and at the end of that movie Violet seemed rather content and happy to have just landed a date with her crush as well as going off to fight crime with her family. But here in this movie she's acting like a tsundere raging bitch fest, even before the shit with Tony finding out who she was happened.

It feels overall more cartoony even with the art direction they went in. The character designs are fucked compared to the originals.

Except that Bob still gets a good enough amount of screentime to be considered as much of the main character as Helen. Except that from the beginning it's his actions and his selfish wishes what drive the plot up until the villain reveal.
There's nowhere written that Elastigirl is the main protagonist, she does beat the main villain but even the trailers focused more on Bob than Helen.

She could have had a plot that challenges her on a personal level.

Without changing much, I think it might have been interesting to have her fail miserably at her first assignment, which would cause her to feel insecure about herself and that maybe she is just not as good of a super as Bob is (this goes along with Evelyn's comment of Elastigirl living in Mr. Incredible's shadow) this allows her to spend some of the movie working in becoming a better super and make her final victory over Evelyn more of an achievement.

Also, it would make Evelyn's plot make more sense if Helen fails at her missions since that would cayse supers to get worse rep which is what she wants.

I feel like they needed to cut down the number of new supers and have more interaction between them and Helen. Like cut it down to three or four, ditch electric guy for sure and maybe merge Krusher and Brick into one character. Set it up so after the train encounter Winston discovers the new supers and pitches to Helen that she could use some backup if Screenslaver comes back. We see them train together and go out with her on the ambassador thing and we see them working together in the field.

This would not only make for some better action scenes and make us grow more attached to and invested in these characters before they're turned by Screenslaver, but also add some more angles to Bob's side of the story, with him maybe feeling hurt and a little betrayed seeing Helen out there working with other supers instead of him and the family.

they fell into the waiting trap. If you're gonna do a sequel you gotta do it before the heat dies down. Not just because of riding the hype, but because the moment it dies down and people start remembering the series or movie as a classic (and a great classic in some cases), the expectations for a sequel rise exponentially, because you're gonna have to compete and surpass not only a good movie, but a good movie paired up with the fond memories and general good feelings surrounding it. It happens in movies, tv and games and the more you wait the worst it gets. After a while you get to the point where you simply will never overcome the expectations unless you catch people completely by surprise, and that is not easy.
Some things are better left alone, and this was one of them.

Anyone who thinks left is better is fucking blind. He looks generic as fuck there, almost certainly because they didn't plan for him to really be important as he is in 2. His screentime probably just reaches a minute max in 1. 2 walks the line of important and unimportant looking design just right. He's appealing/distinct looking enough to pay attention to when he's on screen (Important because he gets at least some characterization in 2) but it's still clear he's not the central focus of the scenes he's in aside from the beginning of the film. The design change was definitely the right choice. Not to mention the design would hold up well if he does have a role to play in the inevitable third film (It's made too much money at this point to not greenlight, especially with how barren Pixar's schedule is.)

I feel like a rewatch would affect a lot of people's opinion on the movie. I was kinda disappointed when I watched it first, but I really enjoyed my second time around. They could have easily put this information in the movie visually or through dialogue. There was a lot of time wasted on jokes (some of which are actually funny) that could have been used on telling the story or developing characters. I said this in another thread but Pixar should just re-animate their older films with modern CGI instead of making sequels. Then the "they look old" argument would be irrelevant.

idk, watching these makes me feel like the first one is pretty over rated. the lighting is much more primitive, the animation isn't nearly as detailed, the voice acting sounds a lot more amateur. the only good scene out of these is "wheres my super suit" imo. strictly from a technical level its not as good of a movie. if it helps, just think of incredibles 2 as an HD remake, those are all the rage these days anyway

I can't find the exact interview where he talks about it, I think it was with Entertainment Weekly. Nah man. Both the kids, the parents and frozone all sound great. The sequel is where it gets iffy because the VA's aged 15 years, and Dash was straight up replaced. The FBI agent sounded good in both. But there's a scene in particular in the second where the family is arrested and they're being castigated about the damage done to the city following the underminer fight and the two officers yelling at them sounded terrible and cringy. I feel the same way about most of the lines that came from the dude they replaced Tony's VA with. It's the background characters the movie didn't seem to give a shit about.

incredibles 2 was entirely enjoyable but not as memorable as the first one

the only things that really stood out were the screenslaver monologue/cage fight and the bike scene, and i saw it like a week ago

The villain was very weak, especially compared to Syndrome. They didn't really have anything to do with the actual family drama of Bob learning how to raise his family while dealing with Helen getting to recapture her own glory days, which was clearly the meat of the story. I thought the sections where he takes the family to Happy Platter, learns new math, and takes Jack Jack to Edna while Helen gets to stop a runaway train, save the ambassador and even make new friends outside of her family were far more entertaining than Evelyn questioning whether superheroes were good or bad.

This one felt a lot more "easy pitches to appeal to the CURRENT YEAR crowd." As a father, I was really worried about going the full "LAWL DAD IS BAD WITH THE KIDS" jokes, but they thankfully avoided those for the most part. They did make him way more incompetent as a hero throughout, though, and it really felt like they were DIVERSIFYING the cast as hard as possible. Frozone was a LOT more black in this one. Does anyone have a side-by-side of the two character models from the first and the second movie? And the Tumblr side character heroes were not at all appropriate for the 60s aesthetic, particularly Brick and Void, who I'm pretty sure was a transvestite right down to her lines about Elastigirl giving her the courage to "come out" as a hero wink wink.

Almost every negative review it got was someone complaining about politics, or a lack of obvious politics in the movie. A few complained about an attempt at making people nostalgic for the early 60's.
