Ana's selfishness and coldness seems perfectly fit for the world she inhabits. She's a Sharte crook, and not a very charismatic one. She's as average a person as anyone in this comic, except she has an immense pool of ambition.
That's the quality in Ana I like: her drive. It's what keeps her from actually being average. It's all in her backstory which isn't in the comic - it's on the author's tumblr. Which is too bad. It makes her not just tolerable, but (dare I say it?) genuinely admirable.
From an early age, she was conditioned into accepting life as a prostitute, but she went like "fuck that", got together with Knock, and got herself kicked out of the area with no prospects, no skills, all so she could be anything BUT a prostitute. Only speaking Continental and not even knowing how to read as an adult, she learns pymary. Not in a proper safe, rural university like Duane or Mathis or Bastion or Elka did, but in the dangerous environment of the city, where learning pymary is discouraged due to its reactivity with the surrounding pymarics. Also unlike them, she didn't learn under distinguished, skilled, respectable teachers, but under ... some guy, who knew ... some stuff. Pymary is relatively new to her, and she hasn't had the opportunity to study 24/7 like the better wrights in this comic. Ana's just working with what she has - average smarts, below average finances, and above average balls.
