The Guff of Legends Edition

Dumped by his girlfriend, fired from his job, and newly homeless, hapless everyman Donald Duck's fortunes appear to flip when he inherits the dilapidated, but antique-engorged estate of his great-grandfather, Clinton Coot. Along with his fellow heirs (sly conman José Carioca and daredevil hidalgo Panchito Pistoles) Donald wastes no time in trying to profit from the horde of priceless artefacts, only to be dragged kicking and screaming into an immense and deadly cosmic war.

IMO the three episodes leaked so far have gotten progressively weaker. The third takes a while to get going and several jokes don't quite land. That said it's not without its share of good gags (that random Indiana Jones reference, "I'm leaving you Richard") and Best Boy moments ("Seriously?", "Story of my life", "Someone's working out issues"). The pace does liven up a touch near the end, but eh, a mediocre outing overall.

I've been told things REALLY get rolling with the sixth episode and onwards, so I'm looking forward to that. Hopefully this third eppie was an anomaly.

I don't understand why Donald's love interest is such a cunt. Donald is never nasty to her and her only trait is how much of a horrible woman she is to Donald. That's it. Horrible pairing. Goofy may not have a dedicated love interest, but at least he's single and doesn't have to deal with a cunt.

It never fails, in alternate media Donald simply is given much better ladies to have chemistry with. It's in universal Disney material that he's stuck with Daisy. And honestly she's a bad character in general. Remember the House of Mouse short with Mickey and Minnie trying to have a date and Daisy interferes and at the end when the date fails Daisy blames Mickey and Minnie over the date failing because they weren't honest about how much the couple didn't want Daisy around during their date. I mean come the fuck on. Daisy is just a literal killjoy for everyone. Except Goofy who has never shared any interaction with Daisy.

Is it just me or is this show vastly superior to the new DuckTales in basically every respect? Better animation, better jokes, better characters, actual adventure plot that takes itself seriously.

It's actually really depressing because it shows what the reboot COULD have been if they didn't try to make it so sarky.

I know I seem to be huge minority here, but so far I still like NuDucktales bit better, even tho it has flaws. It somehow manages to be more funny for me.
Caballeros have absolutely more charm to it by classic children cartoon it tries to be, I hope it just gets bit more better.

What I loved most about the Duck comics was when they felt more "real", and the adventures were more about exploring places, historical stuff, etc.

Notice how Frank Angones (DT reboot producer) is now suddenly super active on tumblr, trying to resuscitate the NuDuckTales hype by giving them hints about a "shipping" on the show https://suspendersofdisbelief.tumblr.com
And he also seemed to try to dissuade people from watching the show by saying it was an "educational show" and "had nothing Barks-related". Seriously what does this guy have the against the new 3C series

Neo-Ducktales is just dripping with Seth MacFarlane influence, even if it's not rude like MacFarlane's shows. It's short attention span theatre with an unstoppable focus on characters being smug, horrible people for the lulz.

Look at everything that was forced into nuDuckTales. Douchebag nephews, constant insincerity, everyone randomly being idiots whenever it's funny. Scrooge presence more or less minimized, focus very clearly on the kids.
Do you really think the Rosa-obsessed nuDuckTales crew really wanted that?
No, it was forced on the show by disinterested management who didn't think the traditional Ducks were "cool" enough, or that "the old guy" deserved a series. The results are only as good as they can be in spite of Poochie-level executive interference.

I haven't talked to him, but it seems pretty obvious that Angones would have gone the 3C way if management had let him, and he knows as well as we do that the results would actually have been more popular. I'd be salty, too.

What I don't understand is the fact that this show was apparently completed before the new DuckTales was even put into production. That show entered development in 2014/2015 if I remember right, which means they've been sat on this fucking thing for nearly 5 years.

Why the FUCK wouldn't they release a finished product? And a pretty damn good one at that? Why commission and pay for a programme that you're then going to just let fester for years? Makes me wonder what other shows have been made at Disney and just never see the light of day.

I’d figure. Movies and shows go into production all the time for some to get cancelled anywhere in the production process only to be shelved in the chance of never being seen again. I’m sure many people in the industry have been hardened by this fact and are just happy to be paid for the work they put in.

Also, I’m glad the third episode came with credits! Disney Digital Network (comprised of remnants of Maker Studios. remember them?) is listed as the producer, so this was planned from the get go to be a digital series. It could mean this early release in The Phillipines was a test phase for releasing original content through an exclusive streaming service before expanding it to the UK and the U.S. Like what they do for mobile games.

One episode would be enough to dispel the illusion of it being a Disney Junior educational show and of it having it taking nothing from the Comics. April, May, and June practically don’t even exist outside of the comics, and, much to my chagrin, their Daisy at least takes some bearing from the comics, what with being the worst and basically just a source of conflict for Donald.

The only Ignorance this shows is ignorance of the comics he claims to do justice, seeing as Nu-Ducktales takes Events, timelines, and Lore but for the most part neglects the mood, atmosphere, and Spirit of them, which is equally important, if not more so, to what made them great. By virtue of having silly comedy working with, rather than against, an adventurous spirit of wonder and exploration, it has just as much right to call itself Comics influenced as Nu-Ducktales.

You're correct that the show takes cues from the source material. The show starts with Duckburg suburbs and shows Donald trying a job, mastering it, yet fucking things up; that's a common theme in the comics. There's Daisy's nieces, Clinton Coot, and a brief shot of Donald's parents. And from the cartoon side, we've got the whole three caballeros thing, and the Aracuan bird. Pic related isn't a duck reference, but it's a pretty interesting little detail to add; they seem to have put some thought into the show.

Still, I'm not sure if I want to bitch about Ducktales or its crew ITT. I'd rather talk about this show, it's pretty nice. It's weird how unexpectedly it just popped up yet captured everyone's attention.

I think >>101361754 is right, in this must have wrapped up production within the last year or so. If this is tied into Disney's streaming service, then working on a Season 2 right now makes sense. There's a chance Disney knows this series will be well received, and they'll burn through 13 episodes really quickly on a streaming service format. There's no confirmation or denial as to if the movie happened, but the show is definitely an origins story. If the movie is consider canon, it probably happens long after the series.

There's trippy stuff in the show already like the labyrinth and chalk world, so it's not like the movie would be out of place. Heck, even the idea of using a magic book to travel to different places in the world was from the movie (here's hoping they get to use the serape at some point)

Alternately, the movie itself could just be seen as an isolated birthday party the two hold for Donald.

Part of the problem over here is that they insisted on including Launchpad when he (and Fenton) was a Donald stand-in to begin with (by being Scrooge's adult sidekick who serves as a pilot, muscle, and moral counter to Scrooge). Not helping is that they managed to make Launchpad less believable in how non-functioning he is.

There might be room in a series for Donald, Launchpad, and Fenton. But not in Nutales.

I guess I meant Mary Sues not in that they're Mr. Perfect, but in that they're the showrunners' pets (by Disney fiat if not by the showrunners' own choice), with a huge amount of oxygen wasted on the avoidable problems that they cause entirely by being assholes.

Think how any long Carl Barks, Don Rosa or even Romano Scarpa adventure would be derailed by turning at least one nephew per story into a troll with his own distracting, often selfish and entitled agenda. This is why the nephews were genuinely sympathetic characters before—not just because it would have ruined the mood to make them jerks, but because the stories didn't have the room to deal with the B-plots it would have added.

In essence, the nephews have become something like self-insert fanfic characters. It's even weirder when Webby acts the way the nephews used to act; it's a welcome relief, but since the NuNephews are still there, it's no cure.

I think I enjoyed episode four less than the other ones. The continuity is nice, but it seems like some of the humor is a bit too on-the-nose, and this is, after all, primarily a comedy. Villain isn't much of a threat even when he had the power of the cosmos at his disposal.

I brought up Mystery Inc before, but I take it back. I don't think we'll have robot nazis murdering high school girls in this cartoon.

In Ducktales it's a part of the joke that he's generally hard to understand, so it's played up because it's iconic. The very first line of that one with the money shark is Donald just saying "I'm sure your friends will be here soon" to Lena, but Lena (like the audience) has no idea what the fuck he's saying.

In this it's not meant to be a thing about him, so it's done in a way that people can still understand, while still being his iconic way of speaking.

Ehh, that’s debatable. Donald’s relationship with Daisy isn’t as important to his character as say, his relationship with his Nephews, Uncle Scrooge, or Grandma Duck. Most of the time it’s just used as a source of conflict, with either being used to get Donald into situations he’d rather avoid, like attending a boring Dinner Party, or something that’s being threatened, either due to Daisy getting mad or Gladstone being a dick, and that Donald has to save or protect. Rarely, if ever, does it affect or get used for non-conflict related character interactions between them. The only story I can think of where their relationship was portrayed in a positive light, is when it wasn’t even Daisy, but Magica disguised as Daisy. Sure, they go on dates, but they don’t realy feel like Girlfriend and Boyfriend. In fact, if you removed the stories with plots I mentioned above, you wouldn’t even be able to tell that they’re supposed to be together. If anything, Comics Daisy is the one element that needs to be changed to be more like the cartoons.

The tragic thing about Donald/Daisy is that it’s the type of relationship that’s best for the poor guy. Sure, he’s easy to love because of how he eventually rises to challenges, but when circumstances get too good or easy, he tends to slack off and capsize his fortunes. In Trine there's only one character. The story is that the wizard, thief and warrior got combined by a magic artifact and you transform into each other for puzzles.
The Lost vikings has all three characters on screen at all time and you can split them, allowing for more complex puzzles while being harder.

Aaaand fifth episode is definitely picking up the pace again, after the weak third eppie and the alright-if-not-spectacular fourth one.

Don doesn't seem to appreciate his pals to the fullest extent yet but he's taking steps toward it, I bet that's gonna pay off handsomely later on.

The nieces are so much better than the NuDuckTales triplets, get to be sassy while also going out of their way to help. Xandra continues rocking. José and Panchito still not quite there, if entertaining enough. Ari is great. Daisy isn't but that should only give Donald great scenes.

Actually they’re the gender bends, and they’re still not exactly the same either. For one, Daisy is no Donald, or maybe she is, but only with most, if not all, of his redeeming traits removed. Also Donald is the Nephews closest remaining family who’s raised them on his for years, while, as far as i know April, May, and June all have their family(ies) and Daisy is just an aunt that they visit, so it’s not like they would end up looking at her the same way Huey, Dewey, and Louie look at Donald, who is the closest thing they have to a father.

Yep. In fact, in their first appearance, Carl Barks' "Flip Decision", they are introduced when Daisy is visiting her sister (the nieces mom), although the sister is only mentioned and remains off-screen.

I like it most of the time.
There are a few scene when it looks kinda weird, mainly when a character is running but other than that it's more than acceptable. The art style really helps.
