That's what smothering does. It doesn't make normal people who just resent being lorded over, it makes twisted, entitled assholes and can't relate to anyone because they've only ever been controlled by their doting parents. When they're released into the real world, they're all shit-for-brains. The parents then realize they've created an unlovable monster because they "loved them too much". The world would have chewed them up and spat them out, and the parents being afraid of that would have done the same but worse, only without realizing it before the grim reality appears in the crapper the next morning.
