This is the necessary result of comics peddeling the same characters for the better part of a century and not wanting them to ever phase out. You have to keep resetting them just to keep them in fighting age, and any progress they make as characters has to be undone.

If you want a medium where characters are allowed to evolve, progress, and not get rewound back to their starting position every decade or so arbitrarily? Comics aren't for you.

It's moreso giving writers free reign on characters instead of encouraging them to make older characters more appealing. Writer 1 decides Hero Guy should have a wife and kids and kills Villain Dude. Then Writer 2 starts picking up after and likes Hero Guy enough to want to right him, but doesn't respect his Writer 1 enough to let his storyline stand, so he brings back Villain Dude and kills off his family. Then Writer 3 comes in and decides Hero Guy should be in love with villain dude's wife and cuck him. Then Writer 4 kills of Hero Guy so he can make up with his wife in Hell or whatever stupid shit.

It's not really an issue with comics themselves, it's an issue with how the Big 2 decide to do business. This doesn't really happen when you have single dudes writing One Piece for thirty years, worst case scenario there he forgets plot lines, but doesn't actively undo past character development.

Even the reboots atleast acknowledge that they're reboots. The TMNT have to go through the motions of meeting April and Casey and fighting Stockman and Kurai and whatever but then they all branch off and do their own thing in each incarnation

Marvel is pretty contrived because it's a big interconnected universe that's only ever had one reboot, which changed nothing except adding Miles to 616. Shit like the Ultimates were killed off in the Ultimates to no consequence, and you characters showing up in different books, but the writers don't read all of them so there's not really any attempt to make sure the entire narrative is coherent

Makes you wonder what the actual function of the editors are. What do they physically do in their offices all day?
