As for your point about emotional blackmail, awhile back there was that kid that drowned in europe because his idiot father tried to sneak his family over to the UK in a shitty raft? Then suddenly the cop lifting his drowned body off the beach was on every front page blaming the government for it, instead of blaming his idiot father who put his family into that danger.
It wasn't even like they were trying to escape danger, this was already after they had traveled through multiple countries to get to that point and were in a position of safety.
