He looks through the lens of what those wars meant to American society and the role men like Fury played in those conflicts. It's a great tragedy of a patriot who wants the girl, the war and the victory but he picks the wrong one and pays for it forever after. Frank and Barracuda's cameos are just the icing on the cake.
You seem to value the gore and violence of Ennis writing above the other aspects I listed and that's fine, you probably prefer the first Fury MAX series for that reason. But the height of his abilities, when he's firing on all cylinders in that comic and in the first two volumes of War Stories, that's his best work to me.
