They fucked up not dealing with it.
Now, dealing with racism doesn't have to be fucking bombastic with RAAAAAACISM. You don't need a sarge putting a boot to Jon's neck because he's a NIIIIGGGGGGEEEER. You can have some obvious, yet subtle segragative (made up word) attitudes.
Just have it be an undertone. Kids pick up easily on that stuff. And if not, they'll watch it again, or think on it, and come to the realization themselves; Which actually hits them harder.
Here's a story idea.
Soldiers have some poor attitude to Jon due to race. But that's not the focus of the story. Focus is stopping Nazi-Super-Wheel-Death-Machines. Soldiers all fight. There's no big HE SAVED US scene or HE SACRAFICED HIMSELF FOR US scene. Just see the other soldiers get less restrictive around Jon. Up until towards the end of the story they pal with him. No FOCUS on it. Focussing on it would be a disservice. Most racism nowadays is subtler. It's hardly ever "fucking nigger" "fucking whitey" "fucking spic". It's those niggling thoughts in the back of your mind. It's those behavioral changes you have, like when you sit at a restaurant with friends then you become OVERLY concerned about what you say because there's a black group next to your booth.
Have the story show that they're all just humans kicking ass together.
