There were some dark fantasy aspects, but a lot of it was fairly vapid crap, just like Carebears and Rainbow Brite, and the gens after G1 were even more bland and shitty. That is why G4 was such a surprise. Both Carebears and Rainbow Brite had darker elements that could be turned into a more adventure driven show, once again I doubt that would happen with this nor would it work. "The new mlp" is a meme that will never work because everything will just be compared to MLP by the fanbase. Just look how much people rejected LPS for being "MLP ripoff" even though the only things it had in common were color schemes and some of the talent involved.

Also, Glimmer isn't so bad, her redemption was super rushed but since then she's actually pretty enjoyable interacting with other characters at a decent rate, the worst thing about her is her awful manestyle that makes her look like a bald freak.
