They were a bunch of powerless scrubs who got the shit kicked out of them repeatedly (first by Zorr, then the Skrulls, then Nebula, then Annihilus and his wave, and currently it's the Fraternity of the Raptors that were fucking them over). Originally only the Nova Prime had powers and when Rich got them he became Nova Prime. They slowly turned them into Green Lanterns later on and Annihilation pretty much solidified their status as GL copies.
Nova was never about the Nova corps anyway, it was mostly always about Richard Rider being the lone ranger since both his origin and his reinvention in Annihilation involve the Nova corps getting either decimated or wiped out.

Feige had to go and give her a new personality and identity because the comic character is so awful they couldn't adapt anything worthwhile other than her being in the Airforce.
