Gay relationships in cartoons

Let's talk about how to put gay people in your show.

I think it's safe to say that homosexuality is much more accepted now than it was a generation ago. As such, gay characters seem to be coming up more and more often in comics and cartoons as society as a whole tries to get more comfortable with the idea.

While this is a noble cause, I can't help but feel progressivism for progressivism' sake isn't the best way to go about it. When every show makes a habit of highlighting that someone is gay (usually lesbian, it seems) it often seems less like they're trying to normalize it and more that they're trying to congratulate themselves on their tolerance. Every show seems to have their token gay relationship, and I can't help but feel like in a few years' time, we'll look back on that the same way we look back on token blacks, token women, etc.

What exactly is the best way to show a gay relationship in your story without coming across as a bleeding heart liberal who's simply trying to appeal to progressivism?
