There's not too much interest in serialization in TV animation right now, so every show has to be less of something carefully planned and considered and more of a "platform": generic enough to have infinite potential for plots, yet striking enough to be immediately appealing and draw in viewers. Most shows fail on the second point.

Clarence is loved by people who actually have watched it, hated by people who write it off based on the artstyle and having a “dumb” protagonist (ignoring he’s a quite realistic 8-year-old)
Something to note is that Clarence’s head writer (and voice of the title character for most of its run) is going to be head writer on Twelve Forever as well

im not quite sure. I've watched tons of cartoons that date back from the 20's to shows from the present time. The way I see it, Cartoons were always targeted towards a general audience. Of course there were the exception of a number of Looney Tunes, Popeye and Betty Boop shorts that targeted for older audiences but I digress. I do watch a bunch of contemporary shows and get a kick out the ones you've listed. I even appreciated a couple of early to mid 2010s cartoons from CN., When I mean tumbr-esque cartoons, I'm referring to the more recent shows and trends on cartoon network and nickelodeon which have been pushing this derivative one dimensional nerd girl/boy with superpowers that feature absurdist humor and art style that resemble adventure time or Steven Universe.

Maybe you are right. it could be possible that
I'm getting to old for them or that Im not really into the newer trends

Interesting, I didn't know Twelve Forever was ordered to series. I did enjoy Clarence, it's one of the few recent cartoons I've actually found myself laughing at. The supporting characters are the best part.

Some philiphino whore with a heart of gold goes beyond the lines of slutty to help a client get back home after losing his visa despite his awkward reaction to finding out he just fucked a dude.

At least that's what I would write, or the shenanigans of a transvestite in Mexico, balancing his nightlife and his office job coming to terms with getting out of the closet.

Honestly I wouldn't aim this shit directly to kids, if I was forced to I would use something like snail/mollusk people finding out what they want to be or just a thing mentioned but never touched because they are adventuring instead of worrying about what's under the shell.

I see things like this said a lot, but do you really think your taste are that different from when you were like 7-12?
I feel like I still enjoy the same kinds of shows as I did then, I can still go back and enjoy shows like EEnE, AT, Cowboy Bebop Ren and Stimpy, Rocko, S-cry-ed, Johnny Bravo, or Tom and Jerry, shows I watched at various different points in my chilhood, and I still feel like I get the same enjoyment out of them as I did years ago. I get similar vibes from something like Twelve Forever as I do/did from the earlier seasons of AT, I just can't imagine that if I were 10-13 years younger I wouldn't enjoy it, or any other shows I like.

Nepotism in the industry stagnating talent by excluding those who are either trying to break into it themselves or are those who are in it but are not part of a higher-up's circle. Look at CN, when Adventure Time and Regular Show dropped that basically sealed who'd be calling the shots when it comes to new shows and what designs/art styles get approved.
One of those shows is long over and the other is well on its way out but in the time between now and when they were in their middle seasons look at the list of people who either have their own show running on the channel or have had a show pilot air in a bid to become one, you can in some way or form trace them back to Adventure Time and Regular Show.

You forget both of those shows trace their lineage from Flapjack, where is also where the tracing the storyboards/ignoring the model sheets production method comes from as well. I never would’ve thought Flap would be so influential

Kind of. I see what you're saying and I don't disagree, I like a lot of the same shows I liked as a kid but some just don't hold up. I also like a lot of things now as an adult that kid-me would have been totally bored by. I did have a much shorter attention span as a kid so there's that.

Which is weird because Flapjack had clean flow and a brisk pace which not only hides the inconsistencies in the animation but also played to the strengths of having them in the first place. All these new shows as so pitifully slow to the point that you get worst case scenarios like Steven Universe that basically crawl from scene to scene and the abandoned techniques show nothing but laziness and a lack of structure in the animation department. Doesn't help that many of these shows lack the kind of dynamism Flapjack relied on for its humor.

Well hell man, you just answered your own question. Its a trend.

Trends come and go, kind of like the Battle Royale craze or Minecraft craze in Vidya, people will chase what they know is popular in hopes to garner some of the glory themselves. Its kind of a self-defeating attitude, since y'know, industry leaders lead, not follow.

In terms of character design though, yeah I'm getting sick of it myself. There's only so many times I can see the same flat, uninspired, googly-eyed, thin as a pencil or fat as a clump character with personalities as flat as they are.

Using "tumblr" to describe the aesthetic of a show is just making the word synonymous with "contemporary". That's just the future. The 90s were edgy and the present is safe, though some dark themes and concepts are brought up.

The tweet wasn't from Julia, but someone else who worked on the show and it says Reggie is a "queer girl" whatever that might mean.

I'm guessing it was deleted because it was meant to be some big twist instead of something we know right off the bat.

I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Julia Pott’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
