All of Homeworlds decisions in Gems and tech are retarded
They put RUBIES, which are basically walking idiots in charge of protecting a Sapphire which can predict the future. PREDICTING THE FUTURE WHICH CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING! and they leave it to Three Stooges.
The Prophets put Elites and Brutes in charge to protect them. Both of them are known to be able to do damage.
Grunts may be pathetic as all hell but they can at least be decent cannon fonder and follow orders. They even had a whole thing called the Grunt Rebellion in Halo Lore where they actually devastated a good chunk of the Covenant. But after that you got Elites, Brutes, and Wasps which all can be good soldiers in fights.
From what we've seen most of their weaponry was hand to hand combat based, with only a handful of weapons that fired projectiles
Theres a reason why most civilizations chose to upgrade to fire arms and not stay down to swords and spears
Even with all their abilities they're still fucked seeing as all it would take is a
good shot and then theyre dead, all you'd have to do is hit their gem thats basically a giant spot that screams "Hit Me Here"
Things like Aquamarines, and Peridots seem more bound to rounding up shit and doing reports rather than making actual progess in wars, the tools they have are great but all they need to be shot down is basiclly any weapon that can hit them in mid air, or just get multiple people to gang up on them at once and spread out
Beating most gems isnt hard.
They'd lose big leauge
It should also be noted that whatever powerful weapon used against Earth only created a giant crater in Russia, while the covenant has the ability to seemingly glass entire continents in only a few minutes.
It should also be noted that gems are getting weaker, from what Peridot said a while back
"They dont make gems like they used to"
