3D can look increasingly realistic with better tech but that's not the point of animation. The expressiveness of 2D is damn near impossible to capture with 3D. You would have to put in assloads of extra effort to add the life in, which kinda nullifies the point of 3D. I don't care what disney/pixar or anyone else says, the primary point of 3D is to cut time and money drawing frames. If you have to constantly go in and tweak things to achieve a more animated look, then you've lost some of the advantages of using 3D models. And the end product will STILL age poorly unless it's hyper stylized and animated, which again, takes the advantages of 3D away.
