Combo of Fox milking the brand to death and Disney executives being petty as fuck that hurt it's popularity.

Disney intentionally gutted X-Men merchandise and other media to expand the avengers franchise. Fox movies dropped in popularity due to the Fatique.

Given how the Inhumans/Eternals are failing to replace the X-Men, they will come back eventually.

Disney owns the Xmen but until just recently had no movie rights. Now that disney got that shit back expect an explosion of Xmen stuff, including but not limited to a seriously coordinated comic/movie/tv/etc blitzkrieg.

Claremont leaving. After that, the X-Men were mostly a mess until Grant Morrison came.
Morrison was followed up by Wheadon, which run was praised for different reasons.
Then the titles became overly complex again, and didn't build on what came before.
Hickman's run started off very strong, but right now he's doing a slow build. The payoff won't come until later.

Going by Hickmann's former works it's all buildup. No payoff.

I think that's what made the original Phoenix arc work in the first place. Would have hardly worked with an edgy character, but felt impactful because of her going from "bland" to manipulated and "high on power" to sacrificing herself. To bad, they retconned it.

Personally I'm glad for the retcon, you can always just enjoy the original story.
People give Jean (and X-Factor in general) a lot of shit, but I thought her times with Scott through the 80s and 90s were pretty nice, specially when they got to interact with their (sort of) kids.

Morrison's problem was "the X-Men are stuck in a rut of retreading the same stories over and over again". His entire run is basically meta as he runs through essentially a greatest hits of X-Men plot points while setting up a new status quo that by the end allows the X-Men to move forward in a new direction. It wasn't "left to rot" though because it was dismantled as soon as Morrison was gone.

And no I don't think the Hickman Krakoa shit is any better. It's another terrible status quo, the latest in a long line of them ever since the decision was made to undo what the Morrison era had built.

Even when it was knew*, it hadn't been THAT long after the Dark Phoenix saga, and it only affected Jean, and even only since she "became" the Phoenix.
Her fans from before that had more reason to be pissed at the Dark Phoenix storyline and her death, than you have reason to be pissed off at the retcon.
