Plus Sugar's already done several homages to NGE such as Kiki's Pizza Dream, The Congratulations clapping from the Trial Ep/End of the Movie, and Pink/Rose effectively being Gendo to Steven's Shinji.
However Connie+Steven would have never worked unless he makes her and her family Pink Zombies. Steven would stay forever young while she ages lut and dies unless he forces her into Stevonnie.
Honestly it's mostly Sugar doing more character assassination via ineptitude like she did on AT. Connie should have never went to Space Camp when she literally has access to alien tech through Steven. If anything she should have made her own Space Camp with Pearl & Peridot as she learned how to make Gem Tech compatible with humanity & vice versa. She's not going to learn anything at Camp that Pearl wouldn't laugh off as being anachronistically juvenile. Plus she's been the one always pushing Steven to become Stevonnie and even getting mad at him when he didn't take her to gem world the first time. Sugar cant decide if Connie is a genuine love interest, a platonic friend, or a shitty Lisa Simpson/PB expy that was using Steven for fun but suddenly outgrew him. The only thing that could make this peak subversion is if Connie suddenly shows up with a Shep 2.0 or Marceline rip off after dumping Steven.
