>>105711088>>105711076>>105711057I phrased it poorly.
I'm saying that its a fairly drastic measure to want to change genders, or to think that you want to. I do believe that its a form of serious mental illness as its a denial of reality, if I were to word it in the most uncharitable and blunt way possible, I'd say that mutilating yourself and then pretending to be something you're not are imperfect coping mechanisms for people with serious mental illness. Of course there are arguments to be made about what constitutes mental illness and if it really matters so long as someone is happy with the outcome, but I'm still skeptical and it does seem to me to be rather like trying to treat a schizophrenic by getting everyone else to agree with them about the voices in their head when perhaps it would be a better idea to push people to accept reality as is and learn to live with it.
Thats all without touching on the issue of people with other mental illnesses who latch onto the idea of themselves as transsexuals out of a desire to explain other problems, who spiral as it doesn't solve their problem and exacerbates the underlying condition.
Its unfortunate that this is such a politicized topic because its quite an interesting quirk of the human brain and I think the politicization will hold people back from exploring all options.
