When he was younger it was almost unnerving, but now that he's aged into it he is become Daddy. Especially in those Zoom chats with his quarantine hair. Unf.
He's also my favorite character, even if they have made him needlessly pigheaded in the last few seasons. He's so broken and yet so selfless. He's never once put his own dreams and happiness above Sam's. He has every reason to be upset about his lost childhood and the way he was raised, but has never once held any resentment towards Sam. He's so pure that his version of heaven was literally just having fun with his baby brother and spending time with his mom. He's more parent than brother to Sammy, and he assumed that role before he was even old enough to go to school. Dean knows what it feels like to have not eaten for days, but Sam doesn't. Sammy always came first. Even when Dean had a chance to get out of hunting for good, and god knows he wanted to, one look at Sammy was all it took to make up his mind.
And yet he thinks he's worthless, that his life isn't worth saving, that all he's good for is to be a weapon. Even though he has so much compassion and empathy and love inside of him. He just keeps pushing it down to do the duty he's been trained for his whole life. That's why the ending of S5 was so poignant for him. His character growth was in learning to let go of his brother. To let him grow up and take responsibility for his own actions, and in turn live for himself and his own happiness. It was never what he wanted, but it was what he needed to do.
And it helps that Jensen is such a talented actor. He plays Dean with such pathos and so many layers of emotion. If he hadn't shoehorned himself into cult hit genre fiction he would be winning awards. He should be winning awards for how he's played Dean.
