Yes, but I think in Castiel's case it was different, or could have been. An angel feeling suicidal, broken and scared? That was some good fuel to add more depth to his character, and it still pisses me off that Dean gave 0 shits about it.
You can notice how one of the best Cas centric episodes were in the early seasons (like The Man Who Would Be King, yes!)>I loved crazy Cas in S7. He was so sweet and innocent, and seeing him in that vulnerable state actually did show us a new side of his personality.
May I say, one of the best versions of Cas? It's a shame we got to see so little of him (same as Deamon) and Meg, even though I don't really like her. To get a little more serious here, I feel like the Winchesters just leaving crazy Cas there to rot was very unsettling. We didn't even get to see what they talked about, or their reactions to Castiel being like that.
