Ashi would not have aged while Jack would if she stayed in the past
Jack would not have aged in the future if he stayed while Ashi would have
With Aku being her literal Dad, Ashi was completley fucked from the beginning.
We as the audience were supposed to pick up on this theme but the plot was rushed and crammed into 10 episodes so it went above most of our heads.
That was the whole point of the scene where Ashi begs Jack not to kill himself. Because she realized her life was doomed from the start and Jack gave her a chance at knowing something greater
Its whats supposed to make the last scene more beatiful, He stands underneath the Tree and realizes this is truly a world Ashi would have wanted to live in. Something she never had growing up in a life of pain and abuse and misery. A life dedicated to killing him. And sure enough, she ended up saving him instead. Because he saved hers. She was doomed from birth and yet he broke through to her and showed her a whole new reality. One of love and freedom. See it as living on borrowed time if you will. But she would have given her life for his because of this. For this reality Jack sought all those years.
And that gives him peace
