The End of the (bean-shaped) Line

At what point will we see the total deconstruction of animation in mass media? The purpose of it all is to make the least expensive to produce programming as possible, so at what point will it hit diminishing returns? What will be the point where ad revenue from people watching the show will no longer be enough to recoup the losses of people/kids just giving up on purposefully lazy animation?

Bonus discussion: Is that the entire point of it? Is it a deliberately self-inflicted wound, or is it just tragically ignorant corporate meddling?
