I don't really know why it kind of petered out in fan art over here (after having a decent amount earlier on) while it got more popular in other countries, but I've thought that maybe younger fans of m/f ships aren't as used to being attacked for their ships, or weren't at the time. GF fandom turned into a cesspit for a while and "anti-shippers" tried to drive some of the artists for that pairing off of tumblr along with some Pinecest artists. m/m ships fandoms always had to deal with people upset at them for liking gay shit and had a more resilient culture back then though so they attacked a lot too but were more likely to keep going. Today, though, everybody on tumblr attacks everyone else's ship as evil whether it straight, gay, or whatever, so now getting attacked constantly is just a possible fact of like if your fanart gets noticed enough.
