>>97409this has been posted on /qa/ and on irc many times over the last couple of years at least and the short answer is that mods will not touch /pol/ with a ten foot pole, nor will they give specific reasons why.
the identity of the site at large has become much more synonymous with /pol/ compared to 8+ years ago and this is very likely the way it is going to stay, regardless of what the original intentions were in 2003.
the reason /mlp/ worked was that ponies wanted their own space and when they got that they were satisfied. in contrast, the current situation with /pol/ was born within /pol/ and so trying to get them to stay there is akin to trying to put the genie back in the bottle. mods probably view this as an impossible task.
