Looking to make changes to the allowable discussions on /vr/ to include ALL 6th generation gaming consoles, not just the Dreamcast. What process would one go through to bring attention to this, as it is a popular notion and the mods over there are not the final arbiter. They are just moderating the rules. The popularity of Xbox, Ps2 & Game cube coupled with their age means right now that they are older then the DreamCast was when it was accepted as part of the discussion. Discussions in /v/ go no where fast, and it seems that /vr/ would be a fair point to discuss these types of electronics.

Who do I talk to seriously about this, and how do I go about it?

I would argue that unless they're twenty or more years old, they're not really retro. Sixth gen is in a weird limbo stage right now where they're old but not yet retro.

The dreamcast is the same generation as the Xbox, Ps2 & Gamecube.

The dreamcast was not 20 years old when it was inducted as a talking point. It still is not 20 years old. It was released 10-27-1998 in Japan. IIRC, it has been part of the conversation for about 3-4 years. I cannot recall exactly when it became an acceptable talking point.

I would tell anyone reading this to look at games you like on the 6th generation that are multi-system releases that you enjoy, and post topics about them. One of the other anons in another thread brought this up as an alternative. It seems backwards that we can talk about Shenmue on the dreamcast, but not on the Xbox. Or Resident Evil code veronica, but not the Game cube version. It is important to talk about retro games that we enjoy and the similarities and differences between the other 6th generation versions of the same game. It was a good idea, and I think there is great potential to help others see the merits of these sort of discussions.

Arguable. The Dreamcast came out about one and a half years before the PS2, which was its closest contemporary. I think it's fair to allow it until the next generation of consoles is introduced, especially since it was the only sixth-gen console over 15 years old when /vr/ was created.

Some things stick in my mind. 09-09-99 was the release date in the USA IIRC. There was a big advertising blitz to burn that date into our minds as well. Some things I can remember well...other things I need post-it notes on my computer monitor.

The line of what is "retro" seems to be "anything created before Year 2000"...but yet software on the dreamcast goes into the early 2000s. But that is a grey area that is acceptable. Talking about FPGA video game systems made in 2018 are also acceptable talking points so long as you can plug a cartridge into them. Using a wii as an emulation machine is acceptable talking point. Using contemporary line doublers to get old games running on 4k displays is acceptable talking points.

NHL 2k2 would be an acceptable talking point because it is a dreamcast game, but Madden Football 2001 on the PS2 is not.

I used a period in between Japan & IIRC. They are separate thoughts, and not part of the same sentence. The first sentence was a fact that is irrefutable. The second sentence is a guess at when the Dreamcast became a discussion approved talking point. Perhaps read things before making an insult out of them.

17-18 years old is not recent. The dreamcast is not even 20 years old. I would support removal of the Dreamcast as a talking point as well, just because it seems contrary. There is no other gaming system to compare and contrast to. Everything else from that generation of game systems is "banned" from conversation.

Feel free to look it up. 2001 is quickly coming up on 18 years ago. In March the Ps2 will be 19 years since release.
