But this does seem like a question that is asked when one is quite young in the educational system, if you really want to choose for example history to learn in depth then the questions become a lot different and it will be less about memorizing years and more about explaining events and reading comprehension.
In my experience I usually do remember the useless facts after I memorized them and I don't ever forget them. I agree the educational system needs a reform aswell for USA as for certain European countries, learning dates and years these days is like doing Math without a calculator. You can easily look these things up on the internet, and there's nothing wrong with that.
