I was watching a rerun of Friends and the theme song started playing. One of the lines of the lyrics was

and this made me curious. I thought Americans don't drive real cars, they only drive automatics, so do they even know what gears are? How do automatic cars even work? Do they have some kind of a gear stick equivalent or does the car automatize everything based on how fast you're going? How do automatic cars change gear to reverse? Can they even go reverse, or was that function removed since they're cars made for literal children and driving in reverse would be too complicated for them?
