He shouldn't have sold rights to access that data on principle, but the law protecting it was repealed like 2 years later anyway, so he basically just sold high. Plus aggregator blogs were already rapidly devaluing it by that point anyway. He sold no privacy impinging info, as far as I can tell. Such a thing isn't possible with 4chan, because the US has never had a law preventing the indexing via spiders/etc of privately owned IP for commercial use, and google has first dibs because of recaptcha anyway.
