suppose $0.999...\neq1$

then from density of real numbers there exists a number $a$ between 0.999... and 1

so there is a digit n after the decimal point where $a_n>0.999..._n$

however, since each digit is a natural number and the largest natural is 9, we've reached a contradiction.

i'm a bit high so this isnt too rigorous, but rate my proof

No. Because 0.999999 does not exist. And while we are at it, 0.5, 0.1244, 1.2555 and other such "numbers" also don't exist.

What you are referring to as 0.5 is in actuality a much "bigger" number made out of a bunch of smallest possible actual numbers.
