I would like to understand how do infants think, how do their brains work, and why do they behave the way they behave. What's the science branch(es) on this topic?

They think like adults except they are smarter but don't know any words yet so they have to think without attaching words to their thoughts, it's effectively still the same thing though.

It's probably because baby brains have low memory skills since memory is useless in the womb. Search for discomfort, adjust body controlling algorithms. Repeat. Get born and see your world shatter.

there are no body controlling algorithms. babies are physico-chemical assemblages operating under the principles and laws of statistical physics. algorithms are abstract instructions humans use to describe the operation of machinery. you are confusing the systems with each other without knowing what either does physically.

how it works changes too.

Think of machine learning model. It doesn't know anything except the rules you programmed it with. It does something, collects data, then improves. The more data it collects the better it gets.

Mind gets better at working with whatever it focuses on. The mind of a baby is forced to focus on the body. But after birth, if the mind doesn't find a goal worth sticking to, its algorithms won't improve.

Especially during the first few months they use primitive instincts. Stuff like flinging their arms out then clutching them back in tightly when they feel like they're falling. Or rooting to find a nipple when hungry.
