is it possible to make helium in the lab, by fusing hydrogen or something?
we might only have three decades of helium left

Yeah that's called a nuclear bomb.
If you know of a less extreme way to generate helium let me know.

It costs more than the helium is worth to generate helium in a controlled setting

We don't have a whole lot of free hydrogen floatin' around either. It's so nonreactive and diffuse it hangs out in the upper atmosphere getting blasted away into space
