Also, out of the three examples you made, one was harmful to embryos and nobody knew because they didn't test it on pregnant women beforehand but was otherwise safe, one was completely banned only after it did its job of eradicating the anophele populations in Europe (and even then, farmers were told to shield themselves while using it), and one was arbitrarily considered by society as a whole worse than alcohol and tobacco because it was too new.
