Who defines a parabola like this? I haven't studied Euclidean geometry in quite a while, but if I recall, a parabola is the curve obtained by choosing a line in the plane as well as a point not on the line and considering all the points that are equadistant from the point and the line you chose.

I meant to say that it's defined to be that. You can alternatively define it as the intersection of a plane and a cone in euclidean 3-space with the angle of intersection being 90 degrees.

I think it is defined in the terms of the ratio of distance from the focus and the directrix.
The U shape example might be applicable since it is open in one "end" and is closed in the other. You know, like a U
