Since being near-sighted and being far-sighted is generally genetic, how does that fit in with the theory of evolution and the survival of the fittest? Wouldn't our ancestors who had eyesight problems have died off before the invention of glasses, contact lenses, and eye surgery?

Near and far sighted is relatively minor and ultimately largely arbitrary modern concept. Sure there are objective differences in peoples ability to see but vast majority of people who wear glasses don't do so because they need them to physically survive but because the deal of spending what amounts to couple hours of work into improving their eyesight is attractive. Poor vision is just a counterpoint of good vision and only exists in that pairing and good vision is beneficial to survival.

That's not correct. Genes contribute to whether you will develop myopia or hyperopia in response to stimuli and to what extent, but without that stimulus your eyes may not develop issues at all. It's very clear that modern stimuli are causing myopia.

It's a genetic predisposition isn't it? If both of your parents wear glasses, it's highly likely that you will too. I've never met a child of two near sighted parents having 20/20 VISION.

I had an optemetrist tell me that sitting to close to a tv or staring at a monitor does not cause near sightedness.
