The exclusion of the number one (1) from the prime numbers is completely arbitrary and a blight on mathematics.

Why were mathematicians allowed to get away with this?

It was considered a prime in the past, but was changed for simplification. Something I don't get is why its often said that primes have the unique property of being able to represent any positive integer, when you can do the same with any composite number or even 2 alone.
