Then the symptoms don't become too bad. The rancher doesn't have to kill the entire herd. The US can keep claiming it's only a problem in europe.

how exactly? both have large guts, both are mammals. sure; it's much more likely to happen with whales than cows, but there are always flukes. the thousands of people who walked past dead cows that had corpses looking less peculiar simply don't take photos of it or don't post them on a cattle mutilation thread on /sci/.

as for why it was on a hill some distance from the nearest cow herds: cows know how to walk, they also can walk uphill. there is even a good chance that it was sick and instead of calling the vet and having his whole herd culled the rancher just lead it away. happens all the time in my eastern european shithole - for extra credit they often throw the carcass into rivers and get tons of people and other animals sick.

As far as I'm concerned when a cow goes down and the rumen really starts to inflate surprisingly fast, looking at the grass around her feet there seems to have been pawing and disruption before she died, judging by the discolouration and ballooning up, the body had been lain there for a couple of days and been rained on. it's looks like wet scottish moorland so it's fairly chilly even in summer but the weather up there is changeable so that's not much of a guide.
It's disputable given there are only two photos of this cow to look at but in this case I side more with the idea of the skin tearing from the pressure of gas build up and causing an extended rip which would have expelled the guts she would then have rolled back onto these a little.

got back to civilization, showed the photos to some actual expert and not some stupid vet(let alone students) went back with a team or group, and should have taken as much samples of the specimen as possible while it was fresh, instead of doing nothing but some photos

You are forgetting a very important difference between me and you, anon: I'm not a fucking larper. It was getting late and we still had some more hours of hiking to get to the only road in the area and catch the last bus of the weekend. We spent maybe 5 minutes staring at the thing and then got going because no one wanted to be forced to camp in there (especially after seeing the cow)
