I'll never knock a good ballpoint, but every tool has their own use. Ballpoints also have their own issues, like blobbing, that will impact your art.

last time I checked, there's no way to have pigmented ink on a ballpoint pen, so there'll be a permanence issue. for quick sketch training blue bic is excellent (value control is great, a little bit of line variation, dirt cheap)

Ballpoints are based and I tell every beginner to start with one instead of a pencil. I use my Pentel ballpoints more than I use my fountain pens because they're always ready to go or get thrown in the trash.

have kolinsky, honestly prefer my synthetic. i like the stiffness more and it's been more consistent. only really use the natural hair on large areas where the extra liquid carrying is a boon instead of a hazard.
