In case you didn't know: you can get a brush that only paints the outline of your stroke in photoshop
>New layer
>Layer effects
>Add outside shadow
>Tweak the settings till you get what you want
>Paint with white, multiply mode
Discovering this has changed the game for me, especially in drawing mecha or particles like smoke/dust or even rocks. I suggest you try it
