You need to have the ability to construct the figure using knowledge and logic. Knowledge of anatomy, proportion. Knowledge of linear perspective. The skill to make it look three dimensional. The logic comes into play in choosing a light source for your scene, applying the shadows based on it, calculating reflected light and color theory. Drawing from imagination is much more liberating if you have these tools at your disposal. The more you know about the world, the better it will be. You don't "memorize" anything, you just "know." You know what it would look like, and you know how to draw it.
